What Google's Core Web Vitals Actually Mean for Your Business

Core Web Vitals are Google's measure of how good the user experience on your site is, and they directly affect your search rankings. Here is what the three scores mean, how to check yours, and what to fix if you are failing.

Core Web Vitals are Google's set of user experience metrics that measure how pages load, how stable they are while loading, and how quickly they respond to user input. Google uses these as ranking signals.

A page that scores poorly on Core Web Vitals is at a disadvantage compared to a comparable page that scores well, and that disadvantage shows up in both search rankings and in conversion rate.

Largest Contentful Paint measures how long it takes for the main content on a page to become visible. For most business websites, the main content is usually a hero image or a large block of text near the top of the page.

If that content takes more than 2.5 seconds to appear, your LCP score is poor. The most common fix is compressing images to WebP format, using a CDN to serve them faster, and eliminating render-blocking resources that delay the page from painting.

Cumulative Layout Shift measures how much the visible content on a page moves around while it loads. A layout shift score above 0.1 is considered poor and creates a bad user experience because users click on elements that move before they can click.

The most common cause is images and embeds without defined dimensions in the HTML. Adding explicit width and height attributes to images eliminates most layout shift issues.

Interaction to Next Paint replaced First Input Delay in 2024 and measures how quickly the browser responds after a user interaction. A slow INP usually points to JavaScript that is blocking the main thread.

Reducing or deferring non-essential JavaScript is the main fix. For most small business websites that are not running complex interactive features, this metric is usually not the primary problem. LCP and CLS are where most gains are found.
